| Name: | Luis Sera |
|---|
Character Name: Luis Sera
Fandom: Resident Evil
Age: 28
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation (if applicable): Judging by his own admission of being a ladies' man, and his casual flirting with Ada and Ashley, he's probably straight~ (Although technically, that doesn't rule out the possibility of his being attracted to men as well.)
Physical Appearance: Luis is Spanish, and something about his dark eyes and chin-length, wavy brown hair looks it(and, of course, his thick accent gives him away immediately). He's handsome in a rugged, roguish sort of way, as does his casual bearing and almost lazy gestures...although, of course, he moves quite promptly when his life is in danger. His clothes are largely nothing spectacular, although they are a bit more upscale than anything seen on the villagers in Pueblo - his dark pants are quite unassuming, and his baggy buttoned shirt seems to be as well save for the embroidered cuffs. His leather vest is perhaps the most noteworthy thing he wears, thanks to the delicate decorative blue-green designs on it. And, while they're easy to miss because his pants come down over the tops of them, he also has some well-tailored boots.
Luis also has a bit of jewelry, in the form of three rings - one on the middle finger of his left hand, and one on both the index and ring fingers of his right hand.
Personality and Traits: Luis is a fairly laid back man and, as anyone who's spoken to him for more than a few minutes will discover, a pretty smooth talker. He's generally relaxed and cheerful, although anyone who mistakes his friendliness for trust would be quite wrong. Luis tends to play things pretty close to his chest - so much so, in fact, that his charming (occasionally bordering on corny) attitude keeps most people from realizing that he's concealing anything from him at all. For some people, distrust equals discourtesy, or even downright hostility - with Luis, he'll likely just feed you a casual lie off the cuff that you'll never realize was a lie at all until - or unless - he comes to trust you better and tells you the truth himself.
Luis has a fairly healthy sense of humor, and often cracks idle jokes - with a woman, they tend to be flirtatious, but with men they're just friendly little asides. He'll even make some in stressful situations, possibly to lighten the mood a bit.
Canon Background: Luis was born and raised in Pueblo, a small and relatively poor farming village in Spain. Not much of note happened - or is known - in his early life, but he quickly began to gain attention when he began studying biochemistry at a university; he was brilliant, obviously so, and established himself as a notable researcher in the field not long afterwards. It was in this capacity that he first attracted the attention of a number of highly dangerous people - particularly Albert Wesker, employed at the time through a shadowy organization, and Osmund Saddler, a lunatic with plans for global domination through a parasite whose origins actually lay within Luis' very own hometown of Pueblo - organisms known collectively as Las Plagas.
(There is some confusion in the canon resources as to how, exactly, Luis came to be employed by Saddler as a researcher; in the main storyline, no mention is made of how he came to work with Saddler, and it is assumed that Saddler sought him out and Luis worked for him for some time before becoming disillusioned with his goals and methods and splitting off from him. In Separate Ways, an alternate storyline following Ada Wong's involvement in the Los Illuminados incident, a report written by her suggests that he became involved in much the same way, but a request for help sent to an old friend was intercepted by her and she offered her aid to him in exchange for a viral sample. However, Wesker's dialogue within Separate Ways suggests that Luis was deliberately planted by the organization to infiltrate the cult, rather than someone who had become accidentally involved and then discovered as a resource from the outside. As two out of the three conflicting possibilities suggest that Luis was found and employed by Saddler before the agency ever heard of him, that's the scenario I'll be adhering to.)
Saddler offered Luis the opportunity to study a parasite thought to be extinct, right in his hometown; as an avid researcher, this opportunity was simply too good to pass up. However, it wasn't long before Luis realized that Saddler was infecting the entire town - his home - with Las Plagas, and that he was a megalomaniac intent on conquering the world with Las Plagas. By the time Saddler had sent Krauser - working undercover for Wesker and the organization - to kidnap the daughter of the President of the United States, Ashley Graham, Luis had resolved to get out. An email pleading for help to an old college friend (who turned out to have died) was intercepted by Ada Wong of the same organization Krauser was working for, and she made contact with him(presumably through email, as a personal meeting to this effect never occurs in Separate Ways). He asked to be taken into protective custody, but Ada was only prepared to offer the organization's help conditionally - she asked for a master Plaga specimen - a variant of the standard Las Plagas parasite that could command other infected - since he was trusted by Saddler and thus had access to them. Luis agreed and stole one of the specimens...but this revealed him as a traitor to the Los Illuminados, and he was quickly captured and locked away in a farmhouse for temporary safekeeping.
Fortunately for Luis, an American agent who'd been sent to retrieve Ashley - Leon Kennedy - happened across the closet he'd been locked into and released him upon realizing he wasn't one of the Ganados, as the infected cult members were referred to. Unfortunately for him, and Leon, the village chief - a mountain of a man named Bitores Mendez - discovered them before Luis could even regain his feet and tossed Leon into Luis like a rag doll, knocking them both out. The cult injected Leon with the egg of a Las Plagas parasite while they were knocked out, and the two of them were locked away in a small cabin. After a brief conversation - during which Luis passed himself off as a former cop, not quite trusting Leon enough yet to reveal he was a former researcher of Saddler's - a Ganado with a large axe entered the cabin to kill one or both of them, but some quick thinking allowed them to free themselves from the ropes holding them and kill the Ganado instead. However, Luis - still not trusting Leon, and a bit spooked by how close he'd come to being killed by a man he probably knew - didn't stick around, and bolted.
The next time Luis encountered Leon, he and Ashley were taking shelter from a horde of angry Ganados in a house in the middle of nowhere, which Luis himself had already been taking shelter in. While Ashley barricaded herself in a closet, Luis and Leon worked together to successfully fight off the horde...but despite their success as a team, Luis again opted to leave after the fight was over, saying he'd forgotten something - in order to go fetch some pills that would suppress the growth of the parasites currently residing in both Leon's and Ashley's bodies, as well as the sample he'd stolen from Saddler. Outside, he met up with Ada briefly - their only face-to-face encounter - engaging in some (utterly futile) flirtation and questioning. While she didn't answer any of his questions, she extracted the one thing she wanted to be sure of from him - that he was getting the sample for her.
Unfortunately, as Saddler's net began to tighten around Luis, he began to have more difficulty evading the Ganados; by the time Luis met up with Ashley and Leon again, in a castle near the village, he discovered to his consternation that he'd actually dropped both sample and pills while he'd been running from Los Illuminados. Although Ashley offered to accompany him, he turned her down, opting to backtrack alone(with the excuse that Leon was probably better with the ladies anyway).
After finally tracking down both the sample and the pills, Luis ventured back into the castle again, catching up to Leon in a large, two-tiered room as he attempted to rescue Ashley, who'd fallen into a trap. Luis' triumph as he displayed his prizes was short-lived, however - Saddler had finally come after him personally, and stabbed him through the chest from behind with a long, mutated tentacle. Once the sample dropped from Luis' numb fingers into Saddler's hand, the cult leader casually tossed him aside, mortally wounded. Unable to leave the dying Luis, Leon neglected to go after him.
With his dying breaths, Luis finally told Leon the truth about his having been a researcher for Saddler, and handed over the precious pills to him, explaining that they would suppress the growth of the parasites inside him and Ashley. Waving aside Leon's attempts to save him as futile, he insisted with his last words that Leon needed to recover the sample from Saddler before dying at last.
However, his assistance to Leon didn't end with his death; he'd left his research notes scattered around, many of which Leon found and which recorded both his knowledge of Las Plagas and some of the specific forms they took, along with their weaknesses. And, eventually, Leon and Ashley discovered a machine Luis had helped develop that allowed them to destroy the parasites within their bodies for good.
Strengths/Abilities: Although he acts very much like a regular guy, Luis is actually extremely intelligent, being a brilliant researcher and biochemistry expert. He's particularly knowledgeable on the subject of parasites, particularly Las Plagas...of course, that specialization won't serve much purpose on the island, but his more general knowledge of biochemistry might perhaps be able to be applied to the dinosaurs somehow, if he can manage to study them. He also has some advanced technological knowledge to go with his work, as he had a hand in the design, at the very least, of a sophisticated piece of lab machinery that used a special kind of radiation to destroy the Las Plagas parasites in a human host.
Despite being a scientist, Luis has a surprising set of practical skills, possibly gleaned from his hunter grandfather - this includes not just an extensive knowledge of the tunnels his grandfather had used around the village of Pueblo(which, sadly, won't do him any good on the island), but general survival skills and gun proficiency(which includes not just knowledge of guns, but being a good shot with them). He was able to survive both a completely overrun village and a similarly infested castle, making runs between each without significant difficulty, and in the end the leader of the Illuminados cult was forced to eliminate him personally in order to get rid of him at all.
Weaknesses/Faults: Luis' casual attitude occasionally works against him; he's been known to forget to bring along important items, or to accidentally drop them while doing other things. He usually comes through eventually, but if you have anything important you need to keep hold of, it might be best not to leave it with him.
Luis prefers to avoid confrontation if he can, despite his skills, and he's as likely as not to run from a situation unless he's actually trapped into facing it head-on. This almost appears cowardly, but when he does actually have to confront a situation, one will find he's not without courage - he just has no desire to fight any battles he doesn't have to. It's actually closer to laziness (or, at the very least, passivity) than fear. Luis prefers a peaceful environment, if he can get it.
Also, Luis is very cavalier about working with other people - oh, he's got no problem with working alongside allies if they're around, but he doesn't give a second thought to running off on his own when the mood strikes him, no matter how dangerous it might be for him to do so. He may discover that this is more ill-advised on the island than it ever was in Pueblo.
Luis is an avid smoker - probably not good on an island where smokes aren't readily accessible and the smell of tobacco will give him away.
And, finally...Luis is a sucker for a pretty face~ He's not entirely easily manipulated, but a woman of sufficient charm could talk him into doing just about anything that wasn't outright against his principles and/or blatantly suicidal.
Items Brought With Them (anything aside from the clothes on their back): Luis has with him a Red9 handgun - also known as a Mauser 'Broomhandle' - tucked into his belt and some ammunition for it; it takes standard handgun rounds. Aside from that, he didn't have anything noteworthy with him upon his death.
